Apartment in Puerto de mazarron Details
Welcome to a very beautiful area known as the Costa Calida (or warm coast).Undoubtedly, the charm of this town not only lies in its varied and numerous beaches(many of which have been awarded the Qf or tourism Quality),nor in its extensive coastline or its magnificent seabeds.

Mazarron is much more than that; it should also be known for its ARCHITECTURAL, archaeological, monumental and environmental heritage. It’s possible to take a journey through time starting with the METAL AGE with a visit to the fortified calcolithic village of CABEZO de la CUEVA del PLOMO.Then moving off to the 7TH Century BC with a look at the Phoenician boats that sunk in front of La Isla beach.

Then on to the Roman sites of SALAZONES del Puerto de MAZARRON. This museum preserves the structure of a large Industrial complex used for the production of salted fish and fish sauces. Next we move on to the reason why during the Islamic era three towers were built, one in La Cumbre, one in Bolnuevo and one in Mazarron, all date back to the 15TH and 16TH century and were built to protect the area from Berber Pirates. Moving swiftly on to the 16TH and 17TH century numerous churches were built, to many to name but you don't need to travel far in this area to find a church. Now more recently in the 19TH and 20TH century the Town Hall was built and it was declared a property of cultural interest.

Lastly on the subject 0f MAZARRON's history we shouldn’t forget its Mining Reserves such as SAN CRISTOBAL and LOS PERULES where you can still see buildings and towers related to the exploitation of mines. SPAIN is also very famous for its fiesta's and MAZARRON has its fair share. It has five main fiesta's thru-out the year all aimed at their Patron Saints. During the year a range of entirely free leisure activities have proved to be a great success. These activities include Aerobics, Childrens Activities, Hiking, and Cultural Monumental and Archaeological tours to the most interesting places in MAZARRON and PEURTO de MAZARRON.

MAZARRON boast 35 kilometres of coast, including a 10 kilometre stretch of virgin coast containing a total of 33 beaches. A new project is being developed called the THEMATIC beaches of MAZARRON which means certain beaches will have Facilities aimed for the older people, children’s beaches, cultural and sports beaches. So why not give them all a go. Other interesting places to visit whilst in this area of SPAIN are the Erosiones de BOLNUEVO. not more than a 10 minute drive from the port. The erosions can be seen by the beach at BOLNUEVO and in the foothills of the SIERRA de las MORERAS. The erosion which have formed throughout the centuries by the rain and the wind in a mountain of petrified sandstone as a consequence of the area's volcanic activity.

CASTILLITOS is an old Military fort which today stands abandoned. The panoramic views are excellent and are home to long-range Cannons. Access is via a small road and in the background you can see the SALITRONA cove, the cages for the farming of red tuna fish and the mouth of the port of CARTAGENA. The AZOHIA is in the bay of MAZARRON. It has well kept beaches, and a small jetty and the 16TH century defence tower housing an old cannon built in ITALY and used for the defence of this part of the coast. ILSA PLANA has a church dedicated to the Virgen del CARMEN as well as a Roman and Arab site called LOS BANOS de La MARRANA (Marrana baths) right near ILSA PLANA in EL MOJO'N is the CUEVA del AGUA (water cave) an underground thermal water source. Driving slightly further away from the area's mentioned above are the area's of LORCA and TOTANA in LORCA (approx 30 minute drive from the port) the town of PUNTAS de CALNEGRE is an area with very few buildings and a continuity of Virgin coves of great ecological interest and to the east of the beach you can see an old Mineral Wharf where the train used to arrive from the mines of the nearby MORATO.

TOTANA is approximately 30 kilometres from MAZARRON (approx 20-25 minutes from the port) It has a nature reserve providing wonderful walks during which you can see Wild Boars, Barbary Sheep, and other fascinating things native to the area. The highest peak of the mountain range is 1583 metres and you can see the "POZOS de la nieve" 25 wells in which snow was stored in the winter and used in the summer by the villages to refrigerate food, drinks and to make ice-cream. These wells date back to the 16TH and 17TH centuries. In the port on a Sunday there is a very large market and if you miss it you can always catch another at a nearby area on most days of the week.

In MAZARRON you will find exquisite tomatoes and salted fish: Roe, dried salted Tuna, fresh Tuna and Bonito, as tomatoes and fish is products of the towns wealth you will find examples of these culinary delights just about everywhere, including monkfish, sardine, swordfish, meatballs, lobster, and tasty garlic tomatoes. You can stop for tapas anywhere along the coast on terraces or PASEO ( promenade) Where you can get a good selection of shops bazaars and when you’ve had enough take the weight off your feet and visit a traditional Spanish restaurant and of course the new MARINA for a refreshing drink. Puerto de MAZARRON is a small fishing port where you will be able to experience the authentic SPAIN, so whether your after a relaxing holiday using the lovely beaches or a holiday with a little more to do and see PEURTO de MAZARRON is an ideal place to visit.
