Jaen, Andalucia
The national park of Cazorla, is the largest in Spain and split into a further 4 smaller parks where you will find both nature and ancient Spanish villages with their culture still intact. The wilderness of these parks has been said to be the most beautiful of the Andalucian national parks and home to many protected species. Jaen is also the largest producer of olives. The landscape over large areas is full of olive trees as far as the eye can see, tended by their small whitewashed farms. October sees the Olive trade fair held in the city of Jaen. The city of Jaen, called the "Geen" (way station of caravans) by the Moors, has a mixed architecture of Moorish and Christian influence. The Castle (Castillo de Santa Catalina) dominates the city and is now a government run hotel (parador). The cathedral, built in the 16th century, is free to visit and the area surrounding it is a warren of streets oozing Spanish charm. The Banos Arabes, are 11th century Moorish baths of Ali a Moorish chieftain. They are well preserved and part of a larger museum. |
