It is split into two areas, the old hill township with its steep meandering streets dotted with shops, tapas bars & at the top its Moorish castle, which was built in the 10th century with Roman remains which literally turn up everywhere. From various points at the top you can take in the breathtaking views from the rugged landscape of the Sierra del Chaparral which lies beneath the town to the back, & under the cliffs are sub tropical orchards & expanses of sugar cane fields spreading to the shoreline. To the west lies the small coastal village of La Caleta, which has the last sugar cane factory in Europe. Beneath the old town lies a modern low level beach resort with plenty of bars & restaurants to quench your first & titillate your taste buds with delicious tapas, which comes free with every alcoholic drink. Salobrena has a lively cultural scene with year round concerts, plays & in the summer months outdoor shows are held in the castle. You can of course take part in a wealth of water sports, golf, mountain biking & a real treat for snorkellers and divers is the artificial reef built 2 years ago off the Penon rock to shelter & encourage sealife.
