Airport : Malaga 90 km, Almeria 130 km Almunecar is a very attractive coastal town that is particularly popular with Spanish holiday makers in the summer. The sea front is a mixture of beaches, coves & headlands typical of the Costa Tropical. The beaches are backed by attractive paseos & a number of tapas bars. It still retains a Moorish atmosphere in the old town amongst its small winding streets. It was founded by the Phoenicians some 3000 years ago & later conquered by the Romans who left behind an aqueduct which is truly impressive with the unusual name of Sexi Firmun Julium which was still in use some decades ago. There are a number of attractions which include a beautiful botanical garden with Europe’s largest collection of sub tropical plants mainly from Latin America, a bird park with some 1,500 birds with 120 different species, a number of museums including the Museo Arqueologico in the Plaza de la Constitucion, the San Miguel castle which is perched on a headland that separates Almunecar’s two main beaches, and for kids & adults the Parque Acuatico with a number of exciting water slides. You can obtain more information from the tourist office near the Parque del Majuelo. In the hills & mountains behind Almunecar there are a number of beautiful scenic walks in the stunning countryside, especially in a private nature reserve called Pena Escrita which has log cabins to rent & of course a bar.
