Most rental property owners will be only too familiar with rental scams, however I will outline a few of the methods they use to highlight the problem for those not in the know. Although most enquiries received by owners are genuine, a few unscrupulous individuals use the internet to contact unwary owners with the objective of scamming them out of money. The majority of these scams originate from Nigeria though not all.
The scammer usually makes a basic rental enquiry to establish contact with the property owner, once this is achieved the scam begins…..
Warning Signs
Poorly written enquiries, i.e. bad use of English and grammar (however some genuine enquiries will be from non-english speaking enquirers).
Enquirers who want to pay by bank transfer. Remember that handing over your bank details is not secure. Speak to your bank about other methods of secure payment.
Enquirers who offer to pay, or do pay more than the required rental fee.
Enquirers who use overly formal methods of introduction, often doctor, pastor or reverend so they lull you into a false sense of security.
Enquirers who state they require accommodation for their company, yet do not use a company email address.
Enquirers who require accommodation but for a suspicious number of persons e.g. Require accommodation for 2 persons, but your property sleeps 10.
Enquiries where the enquirer states the payment will come from another source e.g. their Boss/company.
Very short notice enquiries, and cheque/transfer payments.

The Number 1 Scam
Most of these scams revolve around sending you a false payment, often for more than the rental cost. You receive the payment and deposit, informing the enquirer of receipt, who then hounds you for either a refund where they cancel the holiday, or a refund of the over paid amount before their payment clears.
The cheque/money order is usually forged, though often very difficult to detect and coming from a third world country this can take a long time. The scammer wins if you give in to their constant and often intimidating pestering and send them money before the forged payment is discovered.

How to protect yourself
Learn about potential scams in the holiday rental business.
Remain vigilant and wary of the enquiries you receive. You do not need to reply to any enquiry you are not comfortable with, nor continue with a booking before final confirmation.

A quick search (Google, UK Companies House) reveals that the above company does not exist.
