Tenerife Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands and home to Mount Teide, the dormant volcano which is Spain's highest peak. This divides the island into two distinct areas; damp and lush to the north and sunny and very dry to the south. The weather is very good all year round. The majority of the beaches have black volcanic sand, although there are a few which have imported golden sand. The main resorts are busy and have very lively nightlife such as the Playa de las Americas area. Los Cristianos is an old fishing village on the south of the island and it is from here that ferries and hydrofoils make the journey across to the island of La Gomera. Puerto de la Cruz is the oldest resort in the Canary Islands and has some wonderful old buildings. La Orotava is a little way inland from Puerto de la Cruz and is a popular day trip as well as ideal for those who wish to stay somewhere quieter away from the coast. The capital city of the island, Santa Cruz de Tenerife has a deep water harbour suitable for large ships and has some lovely historic buildings. It is worth visiting during February/March at carnival time as it hosts one of Europe's biggest carnivals.
